Elimination Final Preview

Elimination Final Preview

So in our short history we have played a grand total of 6 finals games. Our record is 3 wins and 3 losses.

That is 3 semi final wins and 3 grand final losses.

It is interesting that we have never played an elimination final, coming either 1st or 2nd in our previous campaigns where we have made the finals series.

Also interestingly enough that in our last 3 finals campaigns we have played Brisbane Roar all 3 times, with the record standing at 2-1 to us. The most memorable being last years semi final where we won 5-4 in emphatic fashion in extra time. However our last finals game in Brisbane was the disappointing loss to Roar in extra time, thanks to some help from the refs.

We now face unknown territory, uncharted waters; an elimination final.

Looking at the form for both sides, we have not lost in our last 6 league appearances whilst Brisbane had to rally from behind to defeat the Nix last week.

Our game against Adelaide saw us with an under-strength side, against an Adelaide side fighting to avoid the spoon, and came away with a 2-2 win away from home. In all not a terrible result, but we’ll take it as it maintains our form heading into tonight.

In our 3 league games this season, we have had 2 draws and 1 loss to Brisbane, with our loss coming late January and only after a blunder from Janjetovic late in the game.

From Opta stats:

  • Roar haven’t trailed us at half time in any of our last 7 games
  • We have won one of our last 7 games at Suncorp, losing 5 and drawing 1
  • We have scored 8 headed goals this season (seriously?) which is 5 more than Brisbane

Worrying for us will be the trio of Maclaren, Holman and Borrello, our CDMs and CBs will have a long night ahead of them trying to contain the golden boot winner and co. Macca has scored 9 times against us, scoring 8 goals in his last 7 games against us.

On the other hand we will be relying on the brilliance of Santalab, scoring 14 goals at a rate of a goal every 76 minutes. However the rest of the team will need to step up with the next highest goal scorer being Martinez with 4 goals, and hasn’t scored in the last month.

Another problem for the Red and Black is that apart from Santa, we have scored just 7 goals in our last 10 games.

Prediction: 3-2 win to the Wanderers in extra time!
