Game Preview – 3rd time lucky with Brisbane?

BRIvWSW

The Wanderers head up to Brisbane for their 3rd and final meeting with the Roar in the 2016/17 season. Kicking off at 7.50pm AEDT on Saturday 28 January 2017, the Wanderers look to build on their recent good form and get their first back-to-back win of the season.

Context

Coming off a convincing 2-0 win against Newcastle and consecutive clean sheets, the Wanderers will be high in confidence when they take on a form slumped Brisbane, who have lost 3 out of their last 4 matches. Currently in 7th place, a win could catapult the Wanderers up to 5th and bridge the gap with 4th placed Brisbane to just 3 points. Making this an important match for both teams that will go a long way to deciding the nature of the race to the finals.

Squad

There are no changes to the extended squad for the Wanderers from last week’s win against the Jets. RBF therefore predicts a similar line-up with the only ‘?’ being on Kearyn Baccus, who has reportedly been arrested in relation to an alleged assault.

Predicted line-up:

B.Santalab

J.Sotirio   M.Nichols   N.Martinez

Dimas.D (C)   K.Baccus (?)

J.Clisby   R.Cornthwaite   J.Aspro   S.Neville

(GK) V.Janjetovic

Bench: L.Scott; T.Antonis; J.Kusukami; B.Hamill; J.Tyson

Brisbane’s squad selection will be interesting, as it will likely be heavily influenced by their ACL qualifying match against Philippines side Global FC, on Tuesday 31 January 2017.

The Roar have so far named their preliminary squad as:

1.Michael THEO (gk), 3.Luke DEVERE, 4.Daniel BOWLES, 7.Thomas KRISTENSEN, 8.Jacob PEPPER, 9.Jamie MACLAREN, 10.Brett HOLMAN, 11.Tommy OAR, 13.Jade NORTH, 15.ARANA, 17. Matt MCKAY (c), 19.Jack HINGERT, 21.Jamie YOUNG (gk), 22.Thomas BROICH, 23.Dimitri PETRATOS, 26.Nick D’AGOSTINO, 28.Brandon BORRELLO, 33.Joey KATEBIAN **two to be omitted**

Most notably, Corey Brown is out due to suspension and Brett Holman returns from injury.

What’s expected and things to look out for

Assuming that the pitch is up to standard, unlike in our last match which ended in a hard fought 1-1 draw, we can expect a thrilling game with non-stop attack from both teams. Both the Wanderers and the Roar like to pursue possession based attacking football, so get ready for basketballesque end-to-end action.

Having said that, Brisbane has shown this season that they are willing to adapt their game plan and play conservative counter-attacking football when required. This is a real possibility and something that could prove effective against a Wanderers team that has struggled to break teams down and been shaky in defence this season. However, with a new keeper and 2 clean sheets in a row, the Wanderers may not be so vulnerable at the back this time around.

The Wanderers will still have to be wary of Broich’s passing game, which led to the incredible goal last time. Another player to watch, as always, is Maclaren. He seems to always find a way to score goals against us and we can only hope that he is benched again, likely resulting from contractual disagreements with the club.

Prediction

With the previous two matches both ending 1-1, it is tempting to suggest that’s how we will end up again come the final whistle. We seem evenly matched this season and play a very similar style.

However, with the Wanderers’ defensive issues seemingly under control and with a very dominant midfield, a third clean sheet in a row is a real possibility. Meaning, that as long as the Wanderers can put away at least one of the numerous chances they are likely to create, it should be a handy and important win coming Western Sydney’s way.

Predicted Score: 0-1 – Wanderers to win

Predicted Man of the Match: Vedran Janjetovic or Nico Martinez
