Never ending off season is a killer

Never ending off season is a killer

Wanderers have a glamour friendly in less than a month vs Arsenal FC of England, this game will be used by the Gunners to prepare for their domestic campaign which kicks off on the 12th of August.

The EPL concluded on the 21st of May meaning that their Premiership off season is a mere 83 days long.

By contrast Western Sydney Wanderers started the League campaign on the 8th of October and our campaign finished on the 21st of April, losing on penalties to Brisbane.

If we return to Football on the 2nd weekend in October (Fri 6th to Sun 8th) again this season, which is likely as the AFL and NRL are the weekend before, our off season will be 137 days minimum.

This is far too long!

A lot is made of the lack of matriculation to top Leagues and the dearth in Australia’s playing stocks.

The humiliating drubbing handed out by the Brazilians to the Socceroos last week is point in fact that football produced more stars during the NSL era than it does today in the Franchise era of the A-League.

There are too many old foreign players taking the spots once reserved for youth that were produced by clubs like Olympic, Marconi, Sydney and Melbourne Croatia and Hellas but to name a few.

These teams were not businesses, they were football clubs.

They argued and fought over just about everything, but they produced a golden generation, Tony Popovic himself among them.

These clubs are yearning to be written back into the football narrative, not to be a bottom tier but to aspire as they once did and produce the talent that reached its crescendo in Stuttgart in 2006.

The A-League is talking expansion and that’s great news, but when the two new clubs come in we should be looking to expand the number of rounds to 33 and starting the season 6 weeks earlier in August.

Young footballers need to be playing all the time.

Tom Rogic wont have an off season this year, after the Scottish Cup Final he has been on Socceroos duty and will be so until at least the 25th of June.

Celtic’s preseason camp starts during this time and the Hoops preseason tour of Austria has their first game on June 28th vs Linz, with 4 games played between then and the 8th of July.

This is to get the Bhoys ready for the 2nd round of Champions League qualification starting on the 11th or 12 of July.

That’s just a little different to 137 days off.

The off season isn’t just a killer for fans, it is a killer for footballers too.
