New season, same wasted chances

We may be playing at a new ground and with new personnel, but Western Sydney Wanderers are again living up to the tag “Squanderers”.

Last year we watched WSW play in a heartbeat pattern whereby we couldn’t be beaten or couldn’t find a goal.

Worryingly we are committing many of the same sins.

We are creating the overwhelming majority of goal scoring chances whilst conceding the majority of possession, that is no issue.

The issue is our inability to convert gilt edge chances.

Nichols today was guilty of spurning 3 chances where he failed to test the keeper.

Jumpei was again exciting on the flanks and is a real find for us.

Unfortunately he rattled the underside of the woodwork in the first half when we were well and truly on top.

There is no point complaining about the ifs and maybes, we have to become more ruthless.

Santalab dispatched the Coast with just 82 seconds on the clock.

From there we created enough chances to win half a dozen games.

Our mistake was unfortunate and whilst people will blame Redmayne, i don’t believe you can blame him for the goal.

The back pass was a hospital pass of the highest order.

That said, his general keeping didn’t enthuse many supporters and you would think that after a never ending apprenticeship, that Tyson would get his chance to secure the Goalkeeping position long term.

Something it seems 99% of Wanderers fans are desperate to see.

The positives from the game are that our passing was crisp (the assist was amazing), we didn’t concede silly cards and we largely dominated the game.

The negatives were one moment of madness, a couple of passes across and empty goal mouth and spurned chances by our attacking players.

Hopefully Popa can get Nichols firing again and Bulut too for that matter.

The talent is there, we all know this squad holds great potential.

It is just a matter of time til this team clicks and attain the standards Popa demands.
