Following a demolition of Wellington Phoenix on Friday night at ANZ Stadium, the Wanderers now come up against the feel-good story of the season, Newcastle Jets. Newcastle has been continuing the fly on their high form throughout the season, including a 4-0 drubbing of the Wanderers back in round 12.
That loss was the Wanderers first-ever loss to the Jets in Newcastle and was truly one of the low points of the season for the red and black. But, with the Wanderers coming off the back of 2 impressive Victories against the Mariners and Wellington, they’ll be looking to push for 4th spot, currently sitting 1 point Victory and 2 points behind Adelaide. To add to the Wanderers confidence, marquee Alvaro Cejudo returns this week and will be looking to get back into the starting 11 ASAP.
Michael Thwaite’s goal last week marked his 10th career goal across nearly 150 games.
While Hamill has had his critics during his time at the Wanderers, this season he has had to step up to the plate, with the departure of captain Cornthwaite and the season-ending injury to Aspro. Against Wellington he was excellent, taking control of the back four with Thwaite and providing an outlet from the back with his passing range. This week will be a much larger test for Brendan, coming up against O Donovan, Petratos, Nabbout and co.
Raul Llorente vs Andrew Nabbout
Llorente was one of the best last week, constantly providing runs down the wing and linking up excellently with Bridge. This week he comes up against one of the competitions best wingers in Nabbout, who has provided a combined total of 15 goals and assists across the season. The battle should be tight across the 90 minutes with both players looking to provide extra width and pace.
Wanderers 3- Newcastle 2
We know we’re being optimistic here but the boys are full of confidence following a 4-0 win over Wellington. Expect it to be a high scoring affair with the red and black just slightly coming out on top with a late goal.
