Santalab double seals Wanderers victory

Super Sub Santalab may have to start reconsidering his title, as he banged in 2 goals from starting striker to help secure a 3-1 win against across the ditch foes Wellington Phoenix.

The Wanderers started fast and strong, taking a much deserved lead halfway into the first stanza, with Santa finding the back of the net after a beautiful build up play from marquee man Nico Martinez.

Wellington started to turn their game around in the second half, with Smeltz forcing a save from Janjetovic. However 2 goals within 7 minutes by Martinez followed by Santalab sealed the all important win.

Shane Smeltz scored a consolation goal for the ‘Nix with 20 minutes left after Baccus was deemed to have handballed inside the box, a call that to a majority was shocking.

Finally with Smeltz getting booked for the second time in the game, he saw red and an early shower, leaving no chance for the ‘Nix to salvage a point from the contest. This giving the Wanderers a must deserved win, and they will be looking to string 2 wins on the trot against the Coasties on sunday afternoon at Spotless Stadium.

Goals:

0-1 Wanderers, Santalab, 22′

Santalab added to his increasing goal tally, chasing down mark Bridge as the Wanderers most prolific scorer in the 22nd minute, firing a strong shot on goal. His shot taking a deflection under the outstretched hand of Glen Moss. All of this coming from an amazing run by Martinez who surged straight through the home teams defence.

Antonis was first to a loose ball, playing it into Santa who expertly cut the ball back to Martinez to fire it home from close range.

1-3 Pheonix, Smeltz, 71′

Unfortunately for Janjetovic he was unable to get a 3rd deserved clean sheet after a handball inside the box from Baccus saw Smeltz step up the to the spot, sending him the wrong way from 12 yards out for a consolation goal for the hosts.
