FFA Cup Quarter Final Preview – Wanderers VS Blacktown City

Wednesday night brings one of the most exciting FFA Cup fixtures to date, when the boys from Blacktown take on the Wanderers at Lily Homes Stadium. The match is already a sell-out and is sure to host an electric atmosphere. Blacktown are coming off a high season, having beaten the mariners 3-2 in the round of 32, local rivals APIA Leichhardt 3-1 in the round of 16 and finishing 2nd in the regular NPL season. It’s fair to say that Blacktown has been a regular performer within the cup, making it to the quarter finals for the second year running. The Wanderers have continued their perfect preseason form with a 2-0 win against Moreton Bay, and a 3-1 win against Brisbane City since their round of 16 victory over Bentliegh.

Key Match up

Joey Gibbs vs Vedran Janjetovic

Gibbs plays his first competitive match against his old club and has been scoring for fun both in the league and the cup. Blacktown will find a way to give Gibbs his chances within the box and it will keep Janjetovic on his toes throughout the contest. Vedran has been near perfect in pre-season only conceding 1 goal across 8 games, being a combination of cup fixtures and friendlies. It will be the biggest battle on the night whether Gibbs can continue on his scoring ways or whether Janjetovic can keep up his excellent pre-season form.

Key Player

Alvaro Cejudo

Unfortunately illness struck Cejudo down before the last cup fixture and hasn’t had a chance to display his services in a competitive match. Whether he starts or comes off the bench, he’ll be looking for a point to prove and hope to impress the Wanderers faithful in a packed Lilys Stadium. His connection with Riera could prove vital to not only Wednesday night but the Wanderers season overall.

Wanderers 3- Blacktown 1

A goal fest looks likely for this fiery clash, with both sides having threat from all over the pitch. However, the Wanderers have been too good in preseason to slip up and should continue their perfect pre-season form, only weeks before the start of the A-League season.
