On Sunday night, Brendon Santalab broke Mark Bridge’s record as top goal-scorer in the A-League for the Western Sydney Wanderers, notching up his 29th goal in the A-League for the club. Santa’s deadly double helped the Wanderers to a crucial 3-1 victory over the Wellington Phoenix as he increased his tally for the season to 11. So what better time to look at Santalab’s 5 best goals for the Wanderers in the A-League than now?
5. 2-2 vs Perth Glory at NIB Stadium 2015-16
The Wanderers opened the scoring early in this encounter with a nicely worked corner drill. Dario Vidosic played it down to Mitch Nichols who laid it off to Scott Jamieson before he drilled it into the path of Santalab to instinctively finish.
4. 1-0 vs Sydney FC at Parramatta Stadium 2013-14
In the 86th minute with time running out and scores locked at nil-all, Youssouf Hersi managed to find space before releasing a ball into the box which was deflected and provided Santalab the opportunity to slot home past his current teammate Vedran Janjetovic.
3. 1-1 vs Melbourne Victory at Etihad Stadium 2015-16
Victory held the 1-0 lead for quite some time in this match before Santalab came off the bench for his cameo. In the 89th minute, a loose ball is pounced on by the energetic striker who skips past a defender before unleashing a powerful strike well out of reach from keeper Danny Vukovic.
2. 2-1 vs Perth Glory at Parramatta Stadium 2015-16
Another late goal from the super-sub, Andreu’s header found the gap towards Mark Bridge who cut inside one defender and moves into the centre of the park. Bridge then dinks the ball over the last line and Santalab dramatically latches onto the ball, hovering over the penalty spot and lifts an audacious finish over the scrambling former Wanderer, Ante Covic all in the one motion. Unbelievable.
1. 1-0 vs Sydney FC at ANZ Stadium 2016-17
It had been over three years since the Wanderers had tasted victory over their bitter rivals, Sydney FC. After a tense first 25 minutes, the home side are on top and following a set-piece situation, Mitch Nichols picks up the ball on the left corner of the 18-yard box before his cross falls to the feet of Santalab with his back to goal. Knowing he has the attention of the defenders, Santa feigns to shoot on his left before he swivels and buries it with his right, nutmegging Vukovic in the process.
Catch 3 of these great goals and many more here.
