Wanderers playing for derby redemption

Losing a derby always hurts, even more so when it is on home turf, but the last Sydney derby was a disgrace, with Wanderers being dealt a record 0-5 derby defeat by Sydney FC.

This Sunday night WSW has the opportunity to avenge that humbling result in our neighbours backyard, or mansion as they like to think of it.

We generally play well at Moore Park and our fans usually travel in large numbers, that the FFA has scheduled this for a Sunday night long after the end of school holidays has ended is perplexing.

It is almost as if they do not want a sell out in what is the A-League’s premier fixture.

The last regular season derby of the year will be 3 crucial points for both clubs for very different reasons.

Sydney FC is sitting an impressive 11 points clear with just 7 matches left to play, a win will move them to within touching distance of the Premiership.

In truth, they can probably drop the match and still win the title, for Wanderers however the need to win is stark.

Scarf and Beanie usually $15, just $10 for this week only.

We are equal on 26 points with Melbourne Victory and have a 4 point buffer over Brisbane Roar immediately below us.

With Perth, CCM and Wellington playing abysmal football of late you would like to think we would pull away from them and secure a top 6 spot at the minimum and hopefully a top 4 spot and therefore a home Semi-Final.

Adelaide United are only 3 ahead of us and if we are to have any chance of winning the Championship then it must start by beating the benchmark, skipping the others and leaving the rest behind.

Gombau has finally got the team playing the style he wants, the cobwebs are gone and so are many players who didn’t suit the style he has brought to the club.

The postmortem that followed the last derby defeat has seen major changes and the club is on an upward curve, but encouraging performances will count for little at full-time on Sunday without 3 points.

The Easterners have had bragging rights for far too long, it is time for the biggest club in the city to again take over the streets, their stadium and bring a much need win to the club.

This squad has the potential to beat anyone, it is time for them to beat the team that everyone is gunning for.
