WANDERERS VS ADELAIDE PREVIEW- THE RED DERBY

WANDERERS VS ADELAIDE PREVIEW- THE RED DERBY

Following a week off due to “pitch conditions” at Spotless Stadium, the Wanderers are back in action this week against Adelaide United. The South Australian side also had a heartbreaking defeat midweek in the FFA cup final, following the controversial ball-boy incident with Michael Marrone.

The Reds will be without Taylor Reagan, Tarek Elrich, Vince Lia, Johan Absalonsen and Marrone for Sunday’s clash. While the Wanderers will be without Steven Lustica and Chris Herd, but otherwise remain at full strength. The match presents itself as the perfect opportunity for the Wanderers to push on against a depleted and tired Adelaide side.

It is also new head coach, Josep Gombau’s first game against his old side History The most recent matchup between these two sides was during the semi-final of the FFA cup, where Adelaide came out winners 2-1 despite the Wanderers playing at home.

In recent results, Adelaide has only beaten the Wanderers twice in the last 8 clashes. Key Matchup Roly Bonevacia vs Isias. Bonevacia has been key to the Wanderers attack this season, providing a direct approach with plenty of quality. On Sunday Roly will come up against one of the competitions best holding midfielders in Isias.

The hard-working Spaniard was a key contributor in the Wanderers 15/16 Grand Final loss, scoring an excellent free kick in the first half. Should he get the better of Bonevacia on Sunday, the red and black could be in for a tricky evening in terms of their attack. This battle should dictate how each team approach each other for the 90 minutes and will hinge on which side gets the 3 points.

Our key Player is Oriol Riera, Controversy around the marquee man ensued after the draw with Melbourne city, after Reira was caught on camera slapping Gombau’s hand. The focus will be on Reira to take that aggression and frustration to the pitch on Sunday and prove some of his doubters wrong.

Reira has already scored 4 this season from 6 games and will look to continue his good form come Sunday.

Prediction Wanderers 2- Adelaide 1

Payback is on the cards for the red and black on Sunday, expect a much-improved side compared to the performance against City 2 weeks ago.
