Red & Black Football

Monday Wrap Up

It was a big weekend of football for the Wanderers. We’ve put all the results and recent news together for you here to see anything you might have missed and relive the best bits!

Western Sydney Wanderers got their first home win and their second clean sheet of the season, against Newcastle on a hot Sunday afternoon in Campbelltown. Goals to youngsters Lachlan Scott and Josh Sotirio either side of the break were enough to overcome the Jets.

The win saw the Wanderers leapfrog the Jets into 7th spot, narrowly behind Wellington in 6th position on goal difference.

It was 2 for 2 at Campbelltown with the Wanderers W-League team beating 2nd placed Canberra in a solid performance. The Wanderers were strong in defence against a very attacking Canberra side, frustrating them into a number of wasted chances and long range efforts. Despite their attack, Canberra never really looked likely to break the Wanderers defence and slot past goalkeeper Wyman, who had a great game. In the end, the first half goal to Stengel was enough to earn the Wanderers the 3 points. It was the perfect way for the Wanderers to bounce back from last week’s 10-2 loss in Adelaide.

The win keeps the Wanderers’ finals hopes alive with only 1 round left in the regular season.

The Wanderers’ Youth squad had the week off with a bye for the final round and, unfortunately, with Sydney FC beating the Mariners 3-0, the Wanderers finished 2nd in Conference Group B. The winners of each conference group, Melbourne City and Sydney FC, will now play off in a Grand Final.

News and Rumours

There are unconfirmed reports that the Wanderers are set to sign two ‘Attacking Players’ on the last day of the January Transfer Window. Unfortunately, we do not have the specifics on the players or their exact positions as yet. Stay tuned for more information as it comes in.

That’s all from us, let us know what you thought of the Weekend’s action below!
