Santa and Maclaren for Socceroos

Ange Postecogolu’s Socceroos team are short on goals and are in danger of failing to qualify for the World Cup. Whilst undefeated in 7 games, we have had 4 drab draws where we lacked a knockout punch and tellingly a rescue plan off the bench.

Our foreign based players are not setting the world on fire up front and we need goals if we are to progress. The answers to our goal scoring woes are right under our noses playing in Australia.

A-League fans have been served up a treat in the form of Jamie Maclaren, there is no club in the country who wouldn’t kill to have him on their books. Yesterday he single handedly dismantled a Mariners team that were leading and playing well.

His hatrick turned the match, tellingly for Brisbane it has basically secured 3rd spot for them as well. This is the ethic we need in our National team, a lad wanting to go out and claim the points and table position.

Jamie Maclaren completes his hatrick.

That’s what footballs all about after all.

Brendon Santalab is not a long term prospect for Australia, but he is a short term wonder.  He is in such hot form, why not give him a bench role in Green and Gold? His precocious talent would be invaluable in the run in.

Ruthless and fearless, Santa is on fire.

Realistically we have to beat Japan away and Saudi Arabia and Thailand at home to qualify directly, otherwise we have a soiree to NZ or get pumped in the Americas. We do not need to another trip to South America and don’t kid yourself that a Central American team would be easy.

If we cant get past Saudi Arabia i don’t like our chances against the likes of Honduras.

Ange has changed the system of late with an even more attacking ethos, he doesn’t like to look backwards as his team selections have always proven. That said, picking Santalab is not a backward step, no different to picking Tim Cahill, Robbie Kruse or Matt McKay for that matter.

He is contracted to play for Western Sydney through til the World Cup, why not put him on the bench in our remaining qualifiers and at the confeds? If Australia is chasing a win late, our plan B will likely be to bring on Troisi.

That worked in the Asian Cup Final, when he kicked into an open net after Juric had done the lion share of the work.

I would much rather have Santalab coming on with 15 to go than anyone else in the League. Santa has a bullet shot from distance, is deadly in the box and is a pure goal poacher, he has footballing instinct that cant be taught.

If Santa does get a run off the bench then hopefully it is to replace or pair up with Jamie Maclaren. He has all the toys as well and is a long term prospect for the Socceroos.

Both the old and the new are the finest commodities in our national league, both must be exploited in our national colours. If we fail to qualify it will be disastrous for Australian football in general.

It is one thing to develop for the future, it is another thing to win our next match. Jamie is the future and Brendon is vastly experienced and evergreen.

They are both in the form of their lives and both should be unleashed in Green and Gold.
