Top 5 key players for the upcoming season

With a host of player departures and player signings happening in the off season, the 18/19
season looks set to be an intriguing one for the red and black. Following a disappointing
17/18 season, where we finished 7th, the players and club will look to quickly rectify the
horror show from last season. Here are 5 key players for the Wanderers upcoming season.

5. Patrick Ziegler

Having signed for a 3 year deal, Ziegler will be looking to impress with his first season in the
red and black. Moving from Germany, where he played across all 3 divisions of the
Bundesliga, Ziegler will look to add experience and composure to an inexperienced backline.
His name will likely be first on the team sheet, partnering either new boy Ruon Tongyik or
Wanderer stalwart Brendan Hamill. Whoever he should partner will be in store for some
defensive lessons with the towering German and will be a pivotal part in improving a defence
which conceded 47 league goals compared to Sydney’s 22.

4.Keanu Baccus

Keanu Baccus burst onto the first team over 2 years ago and looked well within his place in
the squad, posing both as a backup RB and DM. Following Poppa’s departure and Gombau’s
appointment, the younger Baccus brother enjoyed more regular football in the red and black
playing 20 matches across the season. While the development of the young prospect was
encouraging, a highlight being a dominant display against the Mariners in Gosford, his
downside was his discipline, receiving 2 red cards and a yellow within that timeframe, albeit
the VAR didn’t help his case. Despite these setbacks, Keanu looks set for a massive 18/19
season, with his partnering up with older brother Kearyn, looking to become a mainstay of
the Wanderers midfield.

3. Bruce Kamau

Signed from Melbourne City during the course of the 17/18 campaign, Bruce was unfortunate
to receive the negative aspect of Daniel Azani’s rise to stardom. While the young winger
flourished, Kamau’s game time dropped significantly and with the January arrival of former
Wanderer, Dario Vidosic, it saw Kamau continue to lose even more crucial game time. He
started off season 17/18 with a flourish of goals and assists, leading to the callings of a
Socceroos callup. With pace and promise on his side, Kamau will be looking to silence the
doubters in his first season with the Wanderers.

2. Vedran Janjetovic

Following his controversial move from Sydney to the red and black, Janjetovic has quickly
become a fan favourite. Playing every game in 17/18, the red belly black snake kept 4 clean
sheets in 33 games across the season, and while the numbers don’t bode well for the No.1
keeper, his season was immense for the Wanderers. His saves throughout the season kept the
team above water at times and earnt himself a massive 4 year contract with the club and with
his age now entering into his goalkeeping prime, there have been calls to make him captain
for the upcoming season. With Nizic returning from a spell overseas and looking to push for
a first team place, Vedran is set to have a massive year for the red and black.

1. Oriol Riera

Riera had a massive 17/18 campaign and was the shining light in a season of storm clouds.
Riera scored 19 goals in 26 games, averaging 0.7 shots per game and broke the record for
most goals in a season by a Wanderer. Scoring more goals with his head and through
penalties than at his feet, Riera will look to build upon a stellar first season at the club and
bring more goals and glory to the club. With the likes of Kamau and Fitzgerald providing
from wide areas, Riera’s heading goals should be even more prolific in 18/19
