Top 5 potential marquees for season 18/19

With Alvaro Cejudo departing at seasons end, the club now has 1 marquee spot available
after club golden boot winner Oriol Riera decided to stay on at the club for another
season. With 1 visa place in the squad still available, the prospect of a foreign
marquee still remains probable, but an Aussie marquee could also be obtained,
considering the club hasn’t had an Australian marquee player since Dario Vidosic
back in season 15/16.

5. Leroy George

While signing George would be a long shot, his 17/18 season was immense, single-handedly
helping Victory finish 4th. Despite his comments surrounding the A league, it is this
writers belief that it was more a money aspect than anything when it comes to
Georges contract situation. Should the club come in with a big money offer, he could
be inclined to retract those comments.

4. Bastian Schweinsteiger

Currently plying his trade in the MLS, the former German international and Bayern Munich
captain would be an immense signing not only for the club but the entirety of the A
league. The only downside is his age and wage demands, but would be an excellent
addition to the German contingent building at the Wanderers.

3. Giuseppe Rossi

Currently a free agent after another respectable season in the Italian top flight, Rossi could
provide the creative spark in the middle of the park for the red and black. Still at only
31, the same age as Oriol Reira, Rossi would light up the A league with his Italian
flare, maybe not so much as Del Piero but in a similar fashion.

2. Ben Halloran

While being linked to Sydney FC only weeks ago, Halloran is currently a bit part Socceroo
with a lot of talent at his disposal, should he be given the chance of regular minutes,
his potential could begin to shine. Another option to solve our No.10 role, the
biggest coup in this deal would be snagging the 6 time Socceroo from under the
Smurf’s noses.

1. Nico Martinez

Nico was a star during the 16/17 season, constantly menacing down the flanks, dropping
into the middle of the park when necessary and quickly became a fan favourite.
Upon his return to his parent club, Olympiakos, he was immediately loaned out again
and is now currently a free agent. While not demanding a transfer fee, his wages
would be marquee, but undoubtedly deserves them. With our biggest area of
weakness being CAM, Nico would fill that void instantly.
